The only reason we comment on groups doing the same shows as us is generally because we don't watch most of the other shows out there, because they suck ass. Groups working on other shows suck just as much as groups working on the same shows as us, they just happen to have really bad taste, too.
Just thought you might be feeling left out.

Re: Hey idiots
Hi, Which groups in your opinion is up to Triad's standard? And if it's not too much of a bother could you elaborate just a little on why these groups are better than the majority of groups out there or why most groups aren't up to par. Just a couple reasons will do. I suppose it is also possible that there are some great groups out there with bad taste. If so can you share with us some examples? Thanks, Ray |

Quality in a certain group will, of course, vary from release to release depending on the staff who worked on it, but in general, some competent groups include the following (in no particular order, just pulling names off the files on my hard drive): Solar, afk, Soldats, Anbu. Reasons: attention to detail for such things as grammar and timing and more than a passing familiarity with the QC process. There certainly may be decent groups out there who just like to pick really bad shows, but it would be tough for me to know about them when I don't watch those shows. |

Dokuro started off pretty good, it's not our fault it decided to fail. Popotan got surprisingly good after the first couple of episodes (once it got past its "omg nekkid" stage and hit the story). As for the others, without UM, we wouldn't have Drago as a translator, so it was a necessary evil. Same with Futari Ecchi and Labaa. All the blame for the Cosgayers/SHit series rests with aceleader, and we will never forgive him for those. |

I for one wouldn't buy something in a shop because I like the owner... I'm sorry, what?! I love Triad's quality, but saying that AnimeOne "sucks" is a sacrilege! Well, everyone has a different opinion I guess, but I had to defend AonE. My all-time favourite groups have been AnimeOne, Triad, Anime-Empire and Anime-Keep. I'm not from these fansub groups, hell, I have a non-english fansub group, and those groups are the ones that have gained the respect I have for them. I know that Triad members attitude has always been like this, but this is the first time I witness such an insult to a excellent fansub group. Oh, and Ayu sucks, I just wanted to say that as well :P. What? I'm saying they suck? Yes, but that's because they _really_ suck. So please reconsider your judgement... well, if you want to, I'm not giving orders. Just my two cents here. |

Still, they are some decent shows that are only subbed by sub par fansubbers. Watching a lousy release and at least getting the gist of what's happening is preferable to watching a raw and having no clue what's going on. It's certainly better than having to learn another language. |

I think it's just as masochistic to avoid watching shows from certain groups as it is to intentionally watch bad subs just because they come out the fastest. It's like, "Series X sounds interesting, but all the groups subbing it are on my blacklist. Obviously, they'll screw up. So, instead of watching it, I'll just sit here and twiddle my thumbs. Oh! I know! I'll go to Group Y's forums and nag them about taking up this series." Besides, they are times when a good group drops the ball and other times when a previously crummy group gets better. Or maybe I'm just being needlessly optimistic. |

I suppose I could do something else and just wait for it to be professionally translated, but I might forget about it in the interim (which would be annoying, to say the least). Besides, fansubs are made by fans, not the aforementioned professionals, so you can't expect them to be perfect. At least groups that try hard and give their all shouldn't be written off as irredeemable just because they made a few mistakes. |

No. 651 LordBrian August 18, 2006 17:51 |
Re: Hey idiots
Yes, excellent response, very insightful, as long as you take it out of historical context. Narutaru was the first project Triad did as a separate group, and we were still working out the finer points of things such as group management and distro, so a joint project made sense at the time. Unfortunately, it was also some of the worst work we've ever done, and I would change a ton of things about it if we could do it again. |

Re: Hey idiots
You DO understand that "professionally translated" doesn't mean it'll be any good, right? The "good" translators do not usually go into anime. They go into jobs translating things that matter, like corporate or government documents, or hell, even literature. The translators in the anime business are probably those nappy people in japanese class that eventually majored in it. |
|
No. 654 Anonymous August 18, 2006 20:23 |
Re: Hey idiots
I would imagine they have to maintain a certain level of competence in order to keep their jobs. It's not like there is swarms of translators on every project. If something is off, it would be easy to find out who was responsible. Besides, the people that take those government or corperate jobs are the type of people who can speak five languages fluently or something ridicules like that. Of course they wouldn't take an animé subbing job. |

Really? What was wrong? Bad translation? Bad editing? Bad timing? Bad trypesetting? Bad QC? Bad encode? C'mon, I want to know what was so "wrong" about that version of Shadow Star Narutaru you did in conjunction with AonE. Feel free to elaborate as much as you'd like. Re: Hey idiots
Exactly. So the "professional" anime translators are the "dregs" of the translation industry. FYI I've seen plenty of translation errors in "professional" releases. You know why no one does anything about it? Because no one gives a shit if it has shitty translations. From what I hear, compentency is not exactly what the localizing companies have a high priority for. Competency -> higher pay so they'll sooner fire the better translator for the guy willing to work on their projects for minimum wage. |
|
No. 665 Anonymous August 20, 2006 03:08 |
Re: Hey idiots
I'll just have to take your word on that since I wouldn't know if a translation is accurate or not. Still, I don't see how competency leads to higher pay. It would be rather difficult to award salary increases based on how accurate a translation is. It would be more reasonable to pay them based on how long they been in the company, which I suppose would give them just as much reason to fire a competant worker, anyway. Also, I don't agree completely with your portrayal of animé subbing as the McDonalds of the translation industry. There's got to be crummier jobs out there. Like translation sites you can find on the internet. Not the automated ones, obviously. |
|
No. 669 Labaamen August 20, 2006 12:29 |
Re: Hey idiots
I guess I'm naive to think that people who do a better job deserve a higher pay. But I'm just saying that if a person is a really good translator, they wouldn't work in anime. If "professional" anime subbing is the McDonalds of the translation industry, then those translation sites are the panhandlers. |

No. 671 Anonymous August 20, 2006 14:58 |
Re: Hey idiots
Maybe. Maybe not. I'm sure it varies from person to person, but I don't believe that most people get into that business because they don't have any other options left. Err... anyway, if those "'professional'" subbers are the lowest of the low, what does that make the "panhandlers." Lower than the lowest of the low? Is that even possible? |
