It could well be against your policy but c'mon, it's Kaiji S2. Triad are straight-up associated with Fukumoto anime adaptations at this point. It would disappoint EVERYTHING if you didn't

Goddamnit, they weren't planning to but now that you've brought it up I'm sure they will just to spite us. They'll encode in 640x480 XVID, too...

On the bright side, initial indications are that Crunchyroll's not picking this up!

Considering you don't even know that the name of the group is "Nutbladder," I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that you're talking out of your ass.

Unless you're maintaining that all that is not Triad is gay, which is of course basically true. But the Triad is gay too. Basically, everything is gay.

Yes! Yes! Sub Kaiji! I love the first season and I cannot wait for the second season :-)

Btw I have just finished the season of Akagi that you guys subbed. I did like the tension and thank you so much for explainign what certain Mahjohnng terms meant when they came up but personally, whilst I love Akagi's cool demeanour, I think if I had to choose, I'd go with watching Kaiji anyday :-)

Different guy here, but Nutbladder are shit. Their translation is bad to begin with, but along with their editing it will be painfully bad compared to the Triad's version, except in speed. Frankly the speed factor makes it worse, as they'll drain viewers away from the proper releases, as much as I guess you shouldn't really care too much what the rest of the community so long as you yourself get the correct version.

I can only presume that you don't speak Japanese if you're genuinely making a claim like that. Or maybe Mandoric's stopped translating for them lately and they've got someone better, I must admit I wouldn't know.

>I can only presume that you don't speak Japanese if you're genuinely making a claim like that.

Is it really that common for people who are fluent in Japanese to watch subs? I'd have assumed they wouldn't bother.

No. 12093

No, but it *is* common for students of Japanese to watch anime. Most people won't quit relying on the training wheels that are subtitles until they feel like they're sufficiently fluent in the language -- and "sufficiently fluent" varies from person to person. One guy might hop on over to raws by the time he can understand 70% of what's being said while another might hold off until he's surpassed 95% comprehension.

So imagine somebody who speaks Japanese well enough that they can understand 70% of what's being said without any outside assistance (dictionaries, 3rd parties) watches a fansub. Wouldn't you agree that he can identify "good subs" (i.e. those which don't make any errors that he can tell) from "bad subs" (i.e. those which do)? Sure, he may misidentify a good sub every now and then -- but he'll rarely misidentify a bad sub since grievous syntactical or lexical errors stand out like sore thumbs. For example, 面白くなってきた ("it became interesting" / "it started getting interesting") might be misread by an amateur translator as 面白くなっかた ("it wasn't interesting") by a simple spelling misread.

Probably more common is for the amateur translator to translate literally for meaning whereas the more seasoned translator can recognize English equivalents of Japanese expressions and apply them accordingly. For example, if someone was reading the book 人間失格 in an anime, the poorer TL would translate this title literally as "Human Disqualification" or possibly "Human Failure" (as 失格 and 失敗 look so similar). But the seasoned TL -- or the resourceful TL making use of his brain and Wikipedia, lol -- would look up the book and discover that its English name is actually "No Longer Human" which in Japanese would be もう人間ではない or similar grammatical equivalents and is clearly not what was written on the cover of the book the character in the show was reading! You could argue for a more literal translation and scoff at the English-language version, but it's important to translate to your audience's needs -- especially when the terms are more scientific. Think "transmutation" in chemistry or "hemoglobin" in medicine. If the doctors say "血色素" (lit. "blood pigment") and context informs you that it's hemoglobin, the translation needs to read "hemoglobin" and not "blood pigment"! :)

The "No Longer Human" example's a pretty nitty-gritty one that wouldn't really affect your average viewer; but for some reason, the obvious ones are all escaping me this morning. Suffice to say:

1) yes, many people who watch fansubs can speak and/or read Japanese to varying degrees and

2) yes, some of the errors made by weak translation teams can be obvious to even the most untrained eyes

3) TheTriad's translation for Kaiji S1 is remarkably good. It would be a crime if they didn't touch Kaiji S2. :(

tl;dr etc etc.
