I'd understand it if there was another good but faster group working on it, but it's Nutbladder, one of the kings of sloppy translation, and this is a series where bad translation is going to impair understanding what's actually going on. And that's without bringing in Triad's editing, which is iconic in Fukumoto series (I just wouldn't mention it if the alternative was decent).

As I'm not a slave to impatience, I'll be waiting on this version, even if Triad end up deliberately trolling release times.

Good to have a decent group giving Kaiji S2 the quality subbing it deserves.

@12667: I was pretty angry at Kaiji at first but then I realized that Fukumoto is doing what he does best: examining the raw human condition. 99.9% of people say "WTF, KAIJI!? DON'T DO IT!" at like half of the things Kaiji does in this episode, and yet 99.9% of people would do the same things in his position. That's why Kaiji is an amazing hero: not because he's perfect, but because in spite of his many flaws he perseveres. He is an everyman in a dog-eat-dog world and we enjoy watching this everyman succeed -- even if he gets into these messes in the first place through some pretty stupid decisions. (*cough*TISSUE BOX*cough)

On another (and tl;dr) topic ...

I went ahead and watched Nutbladder's subs for both episodes last night. As I told one friend, Nutbladder's translations are a great illustration of the difference between academically-excellent translation and functionally-excellent translation. To be academically excellent, the translation needs to say what the original said and nothing else. So for example, if somebody says "I went to the store and ran into him," you don't translate this as "I saw him while I was at the store." The clause structure of sentence 1 is not the same as in sentence 2. And I'm not talking word order or concept order alone: I'm talking linking two independent clauses with an "and" versus creating a dependent-"while" clause. But the thing is, it's laughable to imply that a fansub which said "I saw him while I was at the store" is a terrible fansub. It's not. Functionally, it's just fine.

This happened a few times with Nutbladder's translation in both episodes. Their translations were academically weak but functionally robust. Ohtsuki might have said something like "You guys" when what he really said was "Everybody" (i.e. including himself in the group), but since he was ADDRESSING the group anyway and explaining rules of a game, it didn't make any difference to the viewer's understanding of what's going on. I'd post some others but (a) this is not the Nutbladder Fail Hour and

(b) not at home and so without access to the relevant files

Anyway, I would encourage people to wait for Triad if they can -- but I would also say that there's no point in agonizing over things. If you're going to go rage-crazy when Triad goes three weeks without releasing Episode 10 or some such, as they have done in the past with Kaiji S1, you might as well watch Nutbladder now and watch Triad later. "When it's done, it's done," as Lord Brian says. Come back for it when it's completed. Some have made Nutbladder's translation out to be a re-write of the script, like a bad doujinshi rewrite. That's not really the case: not from what I saw, anyway. Yes, they made some errors here or there. But the translation was still much better than I think most of us here could have managed: speaking for myself, I would have had a HELL of a time translating the rules for the dice game and I think they did an impressive job to translate those kinds of lines in such short time.

Hell, maybe a Triad-Nutbladder joint would be appropriate: where Nutbladder does the initial grunt work with the translation and then Triad goes back over it in the editing and QC process? But that's up for them to decide.

I agree with you. The genre is psychological. But this first ep lacked some of the awesomeness the first season left behind. That's why i said disappointment.

I am happy to wait for your subs, Triad because at least Nutbladder, you know a little concept called GRAMMAR and PROPER SENTENCES. I admit I watch Nutbladder's version but only to get the gist of what's going on :-) If your subs here are as good as those for season 1 as well as Akagi, then I'm happy to wait and not bitch for the "slowness" of your subs because some people appreciate quality over speed.
