Episode 2 has finally been released, despite Assmo's many and varied attempts at screwing up the encode. Enjoy your lolibattles, and the dreaded forbidden technique, the inverse washboard chest grope.

On another note, some of you have wondered why we didn't karaoke the song lyrics. The reason is because karaoke is gay and anyone who demands it likes taking it up the poop chute.

In all future Triad releases, we will be doing away with karaoke, and will instead simply time the songs as we would any other line in the show. If you are one of the many idiotic leechers who judge a release by the l33tness of the karaoke, fuck off and don't download our shit. God forbid you actually judge a release by something that actually matters, like, oh I dunno, the readability of the subtitles. Allow me to paste some quotes made by your peers.

This one was posted by a "Mikademus" on Anime-Planet's forums, regarding EP's release of Shakugan no Shana: I've watched EP's version and it seems like solid work. It features absolutely gorgeous karaoke -fantastically well made, one impressive feature in the ED is that the romaji text floats BEHIND the animation- and a good enough encode. I generally couldn't care less about "frills" like karaoke, but this is very slick. Some lines are phrased somewhat ankward and once in a while I spotted grammatical or editing errors, and due to long lines with short on-screen time or convoluted construction I had to rewind a very few times, but nothing that irritated me. [...] I've got no prior experience of Eval Powar but this seems like a good release.

He had trouble reading lines because of shitty timing and poor grammar to the extent that he had to rewind and watch multiple scenes again, but this seemed like a good release to him. WHAT THE FUCK. Apparently "slick" karaoke can make anyone ignore a halfass sub job.

This little gem, composed by "Haseo" on Tokyo Toshokan's sewer of a discussion board, reads as follows: And just so you know any fansub I have seen that doesn't have karaoke tends to have Horrid editing, crappy encoding, questionable translations just to name a few things. When they don't bother with karaoke 99% of the time it just means the group is question is doing a speed sub or just doesn't know what they are doing.

Now, I'm not saying that Triad doesn't make mistakes, because we make mistakes often. However, saying that we're either a speedsub group (a laughable concept at best) or that we don't know what we're doing seems a little harsh. I think a more reasonable explanation for this quote is that Haseo is a fucking asshat (or, as Anime-Blitz would no doubt call him, a level 3 asshat).

The problem is that Haseo is not alone in his opinion. We know you bitches are out there, and we hate your guts. In the past, we have done simple karaoke for most of the songs, but we still get complaints from people because it's not flashy enough, there's no flying bullets, where are the explosions and bouncing pantsu, etc. Apparently you do not watch the openings and endings for the songs, you watch it for the eyecandy. We don't sub for the eyecandy, we sub for the anime. If you're not there to watch the goddamn show, don't bother with our releases.

And for those of you who like to sing along with the songs and need the karaoke, you disgust me.

So please, next time you see a release from us, hop on our torrent, download the file, and shove the episode up your gaping collective ass.

karaoke subs... who cares?

Personally, I'd just prefer to have good subs that are as accurate as translations can be. Flashy karaoke really doesn't float or sink my boat... fact is, I could care less. If I want to do karaoke, I'll do it in English, on a karaoke machine... why else would I watch a fansub if I actually knew Japanese and can sing along...?

Even typing it, I felt the utter uncoolness of requiring flashy karaoke - not a reason I'm watching fansub to begin with - seeping into my brains. Keep up the good work! (People who actually want to watch anime for anime sake really could care less about this type of bs. At least I am that way. I'm not responsible for fools who think otherwise. Thank goodness.)

karaoke subs

This article made my day. Especially after watching Menclave butcher Macross Frontier by filling dogfight scenes with 3 lines of hardsubbed karaoke bullshit with sparkle explosion effects is too much to bear.

You're 100% on the money, we're here to watch a show, not masturbatory self-congratulation in the form of flashy text effects.

You said it

A more recent karaoke we did featured like, arial black or some shit with no extra gay effects. But the translation was awesome. Any dumb shit can throw in 50 aftereffects.

By the way, Labaamen's translations in Kaiji? Fucking beautiful work. Namen na yo = go fuck yourself brought a tear to my eye.

Triad, everything about you is perfect. I fully support every decision you've made up until this point. There is nobody better than you out there. Not only are you great subbers, but you aren't utter morons, like, well, 99 % of all other fansub groups.

I'll admit: I sing along sometimes. It's just a bit of fun while I wait for the show to start or when I want a small break before I move on to whatever I'm doing next. But I don't need or want flashy karaoke. I liked the way you did it with Bokurano: very plain font that was there for those who were interested but didn't intrude too much into the picture.

Really?

I like karaoke, actually, I love karaoke, but of course agree with OP that a good typesetting, timing, translation etc. is more important than a flashy karaoke, but most of the time there will be releases with both good karaoke and good type, timing, etc.

Therefore I find it a bit sad that Triad chose not to do the karaoke, because it will make me prioritize other subs before Triad, which might mean I may have to sacrifice some quality.

I'm also pretty suprised at the amount of users that skip the OP and ED, since I find it to be a pretty important part of an anime, but oh well.

A (kind) counter-rant

I think that karaoke is just as much a necessary part of the anime fansubbing process as having quality and accurately translated dialogue. Without the karaoke, it feels as if the fansubbing group (i.e. Triad or a.f.k.) is showing a lack of respect to the artist who sings the song by assuming that everyone else who watches the episode is just going to skip it.

Some people, like myself, actually enjoy listening to the anime's opening and ending, and would like to see the fansub groups give the artists the respect they deserve by actually taking a little extra time to add some animation to the lyrics. This will not only show the group cares about the artist who probably spent hours in a studio recording the song for the show, but will also show everyone else that you care about the series as a whole, openings and endings included. Not doing so is a major disrespect to the fans who enjoy the music.

This is just my feeling, although I know that I stand for a lot of other fans when I say this. I know that my comment probably won't change Triad's stand on this, (especially since you yourselves admit that you are "smartasses" and "assholes" in the FAQ) but feel that your rant (calling everyone like myself "gay" and "bitches") just emphasizes the lack of caring for the fans. You need to remember that the reason that you are subbing these series' is the fans. They don't understand Japanese, so you are helping them by translating it for them. Being that you are doing this for the fans, I believe that you should respect the wishes of the majority of fans who want karaoke, even if it just a simple change of the text color.

It's hard to sing along to the shows if it's done with really flashy karaoke anyway. You only get one kana at a time sometimes...

Your entire argument was flawed within your first two sentences. Triad is stating that leechers who value karaoke and flashy effects over quality of translation and production of the sub are faggots. Your argument is that not doing karaoke is disrespecting the content creators.

See the conflict yet? The very thing Triad makes a case against (poor quality + flashy karaoke) is far more a disservice to a show than your ridiculous claim that no karaoke is in some way, disrespectful. Somehow producing a shoddy sub with questionable translation, etc seems JUST a bit more rude.

Personally? I think putting karaoke in IS a disservice, as it draws more attention to the subbers themselves than the show. And don't you know it, but damn, I'm here to watch the shows.

Re: 8772

Some questions for 8772: If karaoke effects are so necessary for the sake of respecting the musical artists, why aren't they in the raw videos in the first place? Do Japanese fans complain to the animation studios that they're not giving the artists the respect they deserve by not creating karaoke animations? Heck, Japanese fans are lucky just to get the lyrics for the songs at all, and that's usually in younger-demographic series. Now, if a group didn't translate the songs at all or cut the OP/ED out of the video entirely because they assumed everyone would skip them, that could be considered "disrespect." But providing no-effect translations lets English-speaking fans experience the songs just the same as a Japanese speaker would.

As stated earlier, R1 DVDs don't have karaoke effects, and unlike fansubs, those versions are actually _approved_ by the anime creators. I've never heard of Gonzo, Gainax, etc. telling ADV, Funimation, and the rest, "Those song subtitles without karaoke are disrespecting the music artists because you're assuming people will skip the songs." How do I know this has never happened? Because R1 companies have to play by the rules set by the Japanese; if they demanded karaoke on R1 DVDs, it would be on R1 DVDs. It would be hardsubbed much to the RAAAAGE of AnimeOnDVD, but it would be there.

So if simple no-effect translations/transcriptions aren't considered disrespectful in the official releases, why should they be considered that way in fansubs? What it comes down to is that you're artificially ascribing disrespect to the artists when no such sentiment exists.

Bottom line or tl; dr: Karaoke is a nice extra when it's well-done, but it's not essential, and it's not disrespectful to anyone if it's not included.

Honestly guys, I've only watched Kaiji and DMC, but honestly, your romanji lyrics were typesetted that good, that I was like 'What the hell! With typesetting like this, screw the karaoke!" +plus your work inside the anime was awesome, so I have no complains. Now, karaoke is an extra, and made for fun. The Romanji and the translation of the lyrics are just enough, so do not bother with what leechers say. It's more than enough that you are already subbing for them FOR FREE!
