I was thinking Japan. You know, since internet downloads don't count as TV ratings and in turn, advertising revenue.

When I said unexpected popularity, I meant that MADHOUSE or whatever other production companies didn't expect the show to catch on as much as it did. It was slated for 26 eps and since there's speculation about the show being extended, well, you know.

I don't know its actual ratings, but there's lots of Kaiji stuff on moontube which can attest for how popular it is amongst elevens. I also know some guy is uploading Kaiji raws onto jewtube and those seem to get about 50,000-80,000 unique views each, mostly from moonspeaking viewers judging from the comments.

I could only imagine what the actual TV ratings are.

You're right in the fact that Japanese production houses don't really give a fuck how many fansub downloads a show gets when considering to do a second season - it's all about the ratings.

The good news is though Kaiji gets great ratings, often doubling the ratings of other apparently popular shows (according to fansub views) like Clannad etc. (source: http://www.geocities.jp/animesityouritu/index.html)

Akagi got great ratings and that paved the way for Kaiji to be created so I guessing there is a very good chance we will see the second and third manga series animated!

I thought the Akagi ending was handled well, considering that the manga is still in Washizu arc. The last scene of older!Akagi lets us know that he wins against Washizu... so it's not like you're left wondering if he dies of blood loss or whatever.

They couldn't be. Opposite sides of a coin for sure, but not bloodrelated. Also, since the Washizu arc was in the 60s and Kaiji is modern-day, it's just impossible.

To illustrate:

Akagi was born in 1945 - 46 at the latest. He was 13 when he had his first Mahjong match, and based on the information above, he would be in his 60s.

We never get any background information about Kaiji's parents and why or how he's living alone jobless in his stinky apartment.

I remember reading somewhere that Kaiji was born in 1975 and the show takes place during 1995, which makes Kaiji 20 years old.

Let's say ten years after Akagi escaped from Washizu's mansion with tons of money, he decides to settle down and have a family. He and Mrs. Akagi then gives birth to Kaiji. This explains why Kaiji also has a long, pointy nose and V-shaped chin.

After living shackled under marriage for a few years, Akagi yearns once more for intense gambling so he divorces his wife. His son Kaiji is a BAAAWWWWing pussy so he abandons him as well.
