So I'm guessing you didn't like Akagi? It was the same thing but with slightly better pacing and mahjong.

I loved Akagi. I hated the first episode of One Outs.

My expectations for the rest of the One Outs anime is in the toilet right now because the first episode was THAT BAD.

The production crew of the One Outs anime is essentially the same that worked on Kaiji and Akagi. Not that surprising since they're trying to replicate the success of those titles.

A few problems though:

NUMERO UNO - One Outs isn't written by Nobuyuki Fukumoto but rather a nameless, talentless author trying to cash in on the 'brains over brawn', 'mind battles' genre the otaku market is gearing towards (works such as Death Note, Geass, and Kaiji).

The main problem of One Outs is the source material, which is very shitty to begin with so it reflects poorly on the anime adaptation.

NUMERO DOS (GURAN KAINA): MADHOUSE is applying the same formula they used for Kaiji and Akagi to One Outs, which IMO is a HUGE MISTAKE. Sure the gambling aspect is there, but what they're playing is the problem.

mahjong =/= baseball

In Akagi, the game of mahjong involves thinking ahead and reading your opponent, taking advantage of unthinkable tactics while still in the boundary of the rules of the game (cheating counts too).

Akagi is also an extremely likable character from the get-go while Kojima (the protagonist of One Outs) is not.

I'm not trying to shit on sports or baseball, since it does involve strategy and psychology, with performance largely determined by the mental state of players (which the 1st episode of One Outs tried and fell flat on).

But I don't see anything substantive coming from a show that revolves around a Akagi-esque character who's an expert on an inferior gambling format (that being beisbol).

The basis of every episode from now on is going to be Kojima about to throw a pitch, and the batter thinking various things to himself. It's gonna be a slow, horrible, painful drag to watch. Kaiji did it, but it was never boring on the level of watching two muscular fags charging up a spirit bomb for 10 consecutive episodes.

One Outs will be like watching a baseball version of Dragon Ball Z. I called it here first.
